Perhaps it’s the swarm of travel photos of my friends on my Instagram feed. Recently the travel bug has been biting me. So naturally I dig up on some travel destinations.
Admittedly, having travelled a fair bit myself, I can be a little jaded and would desire an adventure off the beaten track.
This leads me to Cambodia & Myanmar, 2 beautiful Southeast Asian civilisations.
So.. I’ve compiled a good list of travel research here.. mostly on the food.

As a foodie, I naturally let my tummy do the leading and dug up more on the food.
I was surprised to learn that Myanmar has a close history with India, which explains how curries are an integral part of their cuisine. Aside from that, tea leaf salads are a unique highlight dish. Siem Reap, a popular travel spot near the coasts of Cambodia, is known 50-cent draft beers and restaurants that ranging from touristy to authentic and even gastronomic, a large variety.

Did I mention the coffee?
Khmer Iced Coffee is the Cambodians’ winning formula for coffee: a rich and strong brew poured over a full cup of ice and paired with condensed milk that’s sweetened, with a strong bitter sweet caramel profile. The drink is similar to the Vietnamese version, but I’ve heard Cambodian beans carry a deeper flavour, largely because the beans are sometimes roasted with a bit of fat like butter or lard.
Both countries generally transact in US dollars, and judging by this chart, prices are more or less the same. Although it is always wiser to transact in local currency for closer to local prices. When comes to cultural and sight seeing, both countries have their draws. Cambodia’s Angkor Wat is an UNESCO World Heritage site, while Myanmar’s vast Bagan is equally breathtaking.

So there we have it, a little sneak peek to 2 very exotic travel destinations.
As a huge seafood and meat fan, I must say my heart, or tummy, is swayed by the Cambodian spread. Given how prices are generally the same, it would usually be a tough choice. When it comes to safety, both states are generally safe for even lone backpackers, although Myanmar does have internal conflict in the Rakhine state.
I might be biased, but looking at the food itself, I’m swayed for Cambodia for now.
